How is a round-robin fixture made?
In a league (round robin) every team plays every other team once. The fixture is built with the circle method, also known as Berger tables: one team stays fixed while the others rotate one place each round. That way no pairing repeats and every team plays at most one match per round.
A league of n teams has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches in total. With an even number of teams it takes n − 1 rounds, with an odd number n rounds, and one team has a bye in each round. A double round robin (home and away) doubles the matches and rounds, with home and away swapped in the second half.
| Teams | Matches | Rounds | Home & away |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| 4 | 6 | 3 | 12 |
| 5 | 10 | 5 | 20 |
| 6 | 15 | 5 | 30 |
| 7 | 21 | 7 | 42 |
| 8 | 28 | 7 | 56 |
| 9 | 36 | 9 | 72 |
| 10 | 45 | 9 | 90 |
| 11 | 55 | 11 | 110 |
| 12 | 66 | 11 | 132 |
| 13 | 78 | 13 | 156 |
| 14 | 91 | 13 | 182 |
| 15 | 105 | 15 | 210 |
| 16 | 120 | 15 | 240 |
Example: 4-team league fixture
Round 1
- Team 1VSTeam 4
- Team 3VSTeam 2
Round 2
- Team 3VSTeam 1
- Team 2VSTeam 4
Round 3
- Team 1VSTeam 2
- Team 4VSTeam 3
Knockout brackets and byes
In a knockout (single elimination) the loser is out. If the number of teams is not a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32…), some teams get a bye in the first round. The number of byes is the next power of two minus the number of teams: with 6 teams 8 − 6 = 2 teams get a bye, with 10 teams 16 − 10 = 6.
A knockout with n teams always has n − 1 matches, because exactly one team is eliminated in each match. A 16-team tournament takes 4 rounds and 15 matches.
How are league standings calculated?
In games like soccer a win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 and a loss 0; teams level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored. In games without draws, like basketball, a win is worth 2 points. In volleyball a 3-0 or 3-1 win earns 3 points, a 3-2 win 2 points and a 2-3 loss 1 point. TurnuVolt applies these rules automatically for the game you choose.
