How is a course average calculated?
Each grade is multiplied by its weight and the results are added: average = midterm × midterm weight + assignment × assignment weight + final × final weight. The weights must add up to 100%, so the final weight is whatever is left after the midterm and assignment weights.
Worked example
With a midterm of 62 (40%) and a final of 75 (60%), the average is 62 × 0.40 + 75 × 0.60 = 24.8 + 45 = 69.8. Like many universities, Grade Calculator rounds the average down: 69. On the US A–F scale that is a D+.
What if the midterm is 30% and the final 70%?
The formula stays the same: midterm × 0.30 + final × 0.70. The heavier the final, the more it moves your average: with a midterm of 40 and a final of 80, a 40/60 split gives 64 and a 30/70 split gives 68.

Coming soonFrequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted average of my grades?
Multiply each grade by its weight and add the results. With a 40% midterm and a 60% final, average = midterm × 0.40 + final × 0.60.
What if I have an assignment grade?
Enter the assignment weight and it is included; the final weight is calculated automatically from what is left (for example a 30% midterm and 20% assignment leave 50% for the final).
My average is 59.5. Do I pass?
That depends on your school's rounding rule. Grade Calculator rounds averages down (59.5 → 59), so check your school's regulations.
How is my letter grade decided?
By the range your average falls into. On the US scale used here, 93 and above is an A, 90–92 an A−, 87–89 a B+. Ranges vary between schools.
