How is the required final grade calculated?
Your average is the weighted sum of your grades: average = midterm × midterm weight + final × final weight. Solving for the final gives final needed = (target average − midterm × midterm weight) ÷ final weight. If you have an assignment grade, its share is subtracted from the target too. The result is always rounded up: if you need 46.2, you need 47.
Worked example
Your midterm is 55, worth 40%, the final is worth 60% and you need an average of 50 to pass. The midterm contributes 55 × 0.40 = 22 points. The final must bring the remaining 50 − 22 = 28 points: 28 ÷ 0.60 = 46.7. So you need at least 47 on the final. The same calculation gives 80 for an average of 70 and 97 for 80.
What does a minimum final grade change?
At many schools you fail if your final exam grade is below a set mark, even if your average would be enough. If you enter a minimum, the final grade you need is the higher of the two: the result of the average formula or the minimum.

How do I find out what I need on my final?
Enter your midterm grade, its weight and the average you need. The calculator uses (target − midterm × midterm weight) ÷ final weight and shows the result for every letter grade.
The result is above 100. What does that mean?
Even a perfect score on the final will not get you that grade. Look at the row for the next grade down.
The result is 0. What does that mean?
Your midterm (and assignment) grades already secure that grade. If there is a minimum final grade, you still have to reach it.
Can I use it for a resit or make-up exam?
Yes. If the resit grade replaces the final grade, the calculation is the same; just treat the resit as the final.
